B.Sc. Biotech w/CBZ

Biotechnology is a technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or processes for specific use Understanding the science of biotechnology is helpful in making informed decisions & personal choices related to products derived from its use.

Duration of Studies:
B.Sc. is a three year degree program containing core curriculum introducing the basic principles of biology, zoology and botany. Last fourth year comprises of introducing the basic principles of molecular and cellular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, societal and ethical issues in biotechnology and intellectual property.
Eligibility:
Students with Physics, Chemistry, Biology in 10+2 with 50% marks.

About the Programme:
Biotechnology is associated with the use of genetically altered micro-organisms for production of insulin, antibiotics, enzymes etc. It also refers to transgenic animals or plants for desired food/ product production. Another promising new biotechnology application is the development of plant-made pharmaceuticals. Biotechnology is also commonly associated with breakthroughs in medical therapies & diagnostic devices.
Biotechnologists tinker with living organisms. They use biochemistry and genetics to create new products for the agricultural, industrial, and environmental industries. These products include vaccines, medicines, growth hormones for plants, and food additives.
Biotechnology majors study engineering and the life sciences, learning how to engineer new products.
“The study of biotechnology has greatly expanded with the sequencing of the human genome … In fact; all of life’s processes are now open to study.” - Robert Greene, Professor, Department of Biology, Niagara University
Biotechnology usually requires working with things that are so small (for example, DNA) that you’ll need instruments, such as electron microscopes, to see them.

Programme Focus:
Research and Development (R&D) fields in biotechnology, in the following activities:
• Embryo transfer in animals
• Early diagnosis using monoclonal antibodies
• Applied microbiology
• Biogas
• Single cell protein
• Enzymes and antibiotics
• Plant growth inhibitors
• Natural products
• Cloning
• Protein solvent concentration
• Bioreaction
• Gene isolation
• Biological nitrogen fixation.

Career Opportunities:

Students of biotechnology find employment in research labs, biotechnology companies and government agencies which control the applications in agriculture, research and industry.
Students can work as Research Assistants / Scientists at various government institutes and organizations doing research and development in:
Agriculture, Horticulture and dairy firms.
Drug Companies
Cosmetics and Garment Industries
Food Processing Industries
